Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Theory
This is an advanced course for those who want to take a Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster course and examination. The Coastal / Yachtmaster course is a serious comprehensive course which can be quite intense and pressured in the classroom. It comprises some revision of the Day Skipper Shorebased course plus more advanced skills in offshore & coastal navigation by day & night, pilotage & meteorology.

Required experience
Knowledge to the level of Day Skipper Shorebased. It is not suitable for those who have only taken an ENS or other basic navigation course. Please contact us if you need guidance as to whether this course is appropriate for you.

Content
Position fixing, course shaping and plotting, tidal knowledge, use of almanacs and admiralty publications, electronic position finding equipment, taking and interpreting forecasts, plotting weather systems, weather predictions using a barometer.
Certificate issuing criteria
Background knowledge to skipper a yacht on coastal passages by day & night.
Format
This is a shorebased course that can be taken in the classroom or online by Zoom. The final exam only needs to be invigilated if the students are looking to progress into higher MCA qualifications (Master200, OOW500, etc). If not, you do not need it invigilated and we send the exam papers to you, which you will return to us once completed. If you do need it invigilated it will need to be done in a classroom (cannot be done via zoom) with a Yachtmaster Instructor or Shorebased instructor attending.
After this course you should be able to answer this level of questions:
- using a log extract, plot an Estimated position
- plot a course to steer, use tidal diamond, leeway 5E
- using a known mark on the chart, plot a running fix
- on Apr 03rd 10.00 a vessel grounds 2NM E of Cape Green. At what hour will she re-float?
- what type of vessel is represented by the following lights or day shapes
- what are the sound signals in restricted visibility
- how a TSS should be crossed
- given a possible collision situation describe your actions
- describe in details all five phases of passage making.
